The Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) Auto-fill my return service, available with EFILE certified software products, allows authorized representatives to request the secure electronic delivery of available tax information to the software to complete portions of an individual tax return. This information can also be viewed in Represent a Client.

Using this web service, you can save time and ensure accuracy by downloading a number of tax items directly from the CRA straight into DT Max. Once downloaded, you can then take advantage of DT Max's powerful Right-hand side display feature to view the downloaded data. What you will need to use this service

Please ensure that the following conditions are met prior to using this service:

  • You must have a CRA or Sign-In partner credential and online access for your client. To obtain online access for your client, complete an E-authorization web submission for Authorization or Cancelling a Representative via the Represent a Client portal or through DT Max. For more information, see the CRA's About Represent a Client web page.

  • The time must be set correctly on your computer. The CRA has a time limit for completing the transaction. A discrepancy of more than five minutes between the time on your computer and the correct time is enough for the CRA to invalidate the transaction.

  • The time zone must be set correctly on your computer. This is because UTC time is used for the transaction.

What you need to know

  • You may download your client's tax information as many times as needed, until the moment you are ready to file his or her tax return.

  • Once downloaded, the CRA data will remain available regardless of whether or not you use it to update your existing tax data. For example, if you change the right-hand side display to another option from the drop-down menu, and then return to the "T-slips from CRA" option, you will have the choice of either displaying the previously retrieved data, or updating from the CRA again.

  • As per the CRA Terms and Conditions of Use, you are required to ensure that all applicable fields contained on the tax return that you will file with the CRA are completed, and that the information provided is true and accurate.

  • The data download involves an important principle. In certain cases, an amount may have multiple treatments possible on the federal income tax return and/or on the Quebec return. In such a case, the appropriate treatment of the amount can often only be established once all the information is available (for example, following the examination of the federal slip). Therefore, when you download tax data, it is essential that you verify the data entry, because in cases where multiple treatments are possible for an amount (on the federal income tax return and/or on the Quebec return), DT Max has associated the amount with a plausible treatment considering the information available. For this reason, you must validate such assumptions when such assumptions were made. For example, when your client receives a T4A slip with an amount reported in box 28 associated to code 105, DT Max cannot establish the appropriate treatment for federal purposes. Indeed, for federal purposes, multiple treatments are possible for scholarships/bursaries, fellowship based on the type of scholarships/bursaries/fellowship involved (i.e., whether it is a post-secondary school scholarship, an elementary and secondary school scholarship, a part-time program scholarship, a post-doctoral fellowship or an artist's project grant). Considering that we do not know the type of scholarships, bursaries, fellowship involved, DT Max has associated by default the amount with Scholarships, bursaries, fellowship (post-secondary education). This assumption may be incorrect. It should be verified and validated based on the information from your client. Thus, if according to the information from your client, the scholarships, bursaries, fellowship amount is NOT pertaining to post-secondary education, you must modify the data entry accordingly.

For information on the procedure to download tax data from the CRA, consult the document Procedure to download tax data from CRA.

Recommendations

We strongly recommend that you disable the sorting feature in your DT Max preferences. To do so, please select User Defaults from your Preferences menu. Under the Miscellaneous tab, untick the box for Enable sorting. This will allow you to maintain the correspondence between the copied data (that is on the left-hand side of the screen) and the downloaded data (that is on the right-hand side of the screen). Otherwise, DT Max might automatically reorganize the order of the data by enabling the sorting feature.
